The Paulding County Carnegie Library
staff suggests you try the following search engines, search directories,
and metasearch sites for your information searching needs on the Web. For
more information about “searching the web” contact the library’s
reference department at 419-399-2032.
SEARCH
ENGINES
Currently, the most comprehensive search engine is Google.
Search engines use computer-
created databases of Web pages to return results for your
search terms. Each one uses different methods for finding Web content,
ranking results, and sizing the results database. To get a good return on
your search, use at least two search engines or metasearch
cites for each search (three is better).

SEARCH
DIRECTORIES
Of
course, the most famous subject directory is Yahoo!
But
other real people and groups assemble subject directories as well, by
selecting and organizing Web resources under specific headings. Therefore,
subject directories do not include as many resources as automated search
engines. However, for the topics they do cover, the search results from a
subject directory may be more precise than those of a regular search
engine. Use subject directories to start searching for broad topics or
topics and links that you already know exist.

METASEARCH SITES
Metasearch sites (also called metacrawlers) send search queries to
multiple engines at once and display the results for all of them. Their
usefulness is generally limited to simple searches, since many metasearch
engines do not recognize advanced searching techniques and variables.
They're most useful when individual search engines give you limited usable
results. They can help determine if any information at all about a given
topic exists on the Web.
