Facts:

The steel magnate and noted philanthropist had funded city libraries but never a county library until 1912, when his foundation granted the Paulding Public Library Association $40,000.

The New York-based Carnegie Foundation had two requirements before granting the funds: that a site first be obtained and that the foundation have approval of the building plans. Carnegie has begun requesting the later after viewing one library that he felt wasted his money by having “too many pillars.”

Paulding resident Rebecca Latty donated four lots on Main Street for the site and the Columbus firm of Howard and Merriam, which designed the Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont, drew up the building plans. The one-story structure is built of brick and Bedford, Ind., stone, and contains oak trim.

This marker was awarded in Round 14, November 2002, of the Longaberger Legacy Initiative.

Dedicated on Thursday, September 18, 2003.
